Linda Hiebert wrote her first song at age 13 on a borrowed used guitar from her Uncle Tony. The first chords and melodies could be heard on the front steps of the renovated school house One and A Quarter Mile West of Rosenfeld where she grew up. At 17 she packed her bags, handed in her school books and set out for the city. Migrating back to Winkler in 1975 to settle there and raise a family.
There were breaks in the music, but it never stopped. In 1991, “Stay With Me” came out, a collection of songs reflecting the spirit of motherhood, faith and community. It was 16-years of song writing including “Miss America” written at age 17.
Linda raised four sons in the then town of Winkler with her partner Don, while continuing to play at coffeehouses, churches, weddings, banquets, funerals, malls and fundraisers.
Life rolled on and in 1998 “Yellow Sweater and Other Stories” was released. It reflected the importance of family, and the recognition that we live in a country of peace. In 2002, Linda moved herself back to Winnipeg and the music continued to brew. Eight years after “Yellow Sweater” she brought “One & A Quarter Mile West” to the table. It contains a blend of life experiences including a haunting version of Edgar Allen Poe’s “A Dream Within A Dream”.
Today... Linda travels between Darlingford, Winnipeg and Winkler. She spends time with family, has a garden and still writes the occasional song!
As a young boy he remembers spending hours lying beside a huge cabinet record-player trying to emulate the musical heroes. But despite an early love-affair with music, he really only began singing in public at the age of twenty-three. In university his room-mate and long-time friend, Arlen Penner, showed him how rewarding writing original material could be. With naïve arrogance they began writing their own songs. His sister Heather listened to a few of the early works and dared ask the question, “Would you write and sing a song at my wedding?” The response, “Do you really want my first public performance to be at your wedding?” Without a second thought she replied, “Yep! ”
Warren has been a music a highlight to many of Southern Manitoba's non-profit events, staged performances, coffee shops and open mics. Right now he is working on his second CD.
